Hail the spunky Spidey! The new Hollywood release The Amazing Spider-man had a record breaking start at Indian box office, putting to shade the new Bollywood releases.
Released in English (2D and 3D) and the dubbed Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions, The Amazing Spider-man raked in Rs. 8.5 crore on its opening day, thereby shattering all the opening day records held by previous Hollywood releases in India.
The reviews of the film have been mixed, but there was no let up in footfalls in theatres till Saturday morning. Estimates suggest that the film may notch up the weekend collection of Rs. 25 crore in India. Pitted against the mighty Spidey, the new Bollywood releases Maximum and Supermen of Malegaon were left gasping for breath. Maximum, starring Sonu Sood and Naseeruddin Shah, could manage only 1 to 5 percent response at theatres, while Supermen of Malegaon found no takers. The last week’s release Teri Meri Kahaani rounded off its first week collection with a figure of Rs. 23 crore, which is way below par.
The other release Gangs Of Wasseypur made a little less than Rs. 18 crore. Neither can be labelled a box office success. The coming week would see the release of Bol Bachchan alongside a couple of small budget Hindi films.
